Geolog Kristoffer Szilas leder en gruppe af forskere fra bl.a. Københavns Universitet, som har fundet en helt unik isotop-sammensætning af grundstoffet ruthenium i nogle gamle bjergarter i Grønland. De mener, at dette beviser, at vandet på vores planet er kommet til med meteoritter fra den ydre del af solsystemet, efter Jorden og Månen var dannet. Teorien om at det var meteoritterne fra det ydre solsystem – såkaldte kondritter - der bragte vandet til Jorden har ellers haft problemer indtil nu. For alle de meteoritter, der nogensinde er fundet på kloden, har en helt anden isotop-sammensætning end den nuværende jordklode. Derfor kunne man ikke få det til at passe med, at oceanerne skulle være opbygget af disse kondritter. Men med isotop- fingeraftrykket fra Grønland har man for første gang fundet en stenprøve, der har en værdi, som afviger fra meteoritternes. Det er Kristoffer Szilas fra Institut for Geovidenskab og Naturforvaltning på Københavns Universitet, der har gjort fundet af de flere milliarder år gamle bjergarter nordøst for Nuuk i Grønland.
