Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - Martyrdom of William Hunter
from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu
William Hunter was a nineteen-year-old man who had been deeply instructed in the doctrines of the Reformation by his religious parents from a young age. His path to martyrdom began when he refused to receive the communion at Mass, an act of non-conformity with the established church. This refusal led to him being threatened and brought before Bishop Bonner by a constable. Bonner attempted to make William recant, offering security and pardon, and even a compromise involving only attending communion and confession, but William steadfastly refused, declaring he would not do so "for all the world".Bishop Bonner then ordered him to be put in the stocks for two days and nights, and subsequently sent him to the convict prison for three quarters of a year, where he was subjected to heavy irons. Despite being brought before the bishop five times during his imprisonment, William remained unchangeable in his faith. Finally, on February 9th, Bishop Bonner pronounced sentence upon him, condemning him to be burned. About a month later, William was sent to Brentwood for execution. At the stake, he knelt and read the Fifty-first Psalm. He refused the queen's pardon, as it required him to abandon his faith. Encouraged by his brother, Robert Hunter, who was present, William bravely stated, "Behold, I am not afraid". His final words before yielding his life for the truth were, "Lord, Lord, Lord, receive my spirit".Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
