Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - Mr. John Philpot
from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu
John Philpot was a scholar and gentleman, educated at Oxford in civil law and Hebrew. He served as Archdeacon of Winchester during the reign of King Edward VI. However, with the accession of Queen Mary I and the subsequent restoration of Catholicism, Philpot's support for the Reformation in a convocation quickly made him a target. He was imprisoned for eighteen months before facing examination.Philpot endured fourteen conferences with bishops and commissioners who showed intense "perseverance and anxiety" to persuade him to recant his reformed beliefs. Despite facing harsh imprisonment conditions, including confinement in Lollard's Tower and Bonner's coal house with meager provisions, and receiving explicit threats of being burned, Philpot steadfastly refused to yield. He engaged in long and learned theological debates, using strong arguments against his examiners and refusing to conform. His unwavering steadfastness led to his condemnation on December 16, 1555. On the morning of December 18, 1555, Philpot joyfully met the sheriffs and walked to the stake at Smithfield, refusing assistance and comparing his suffering to Christ's. After reciting Psalms, he was bound and the fire was applied. John Philpot perished as an illustrious martyr, a testament to unwavering faith and resistance during a period of brutal persecution.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
