Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - The Fifth Persecution, Commencing with Severus, AD 192

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

The fifth persecution of early Christians commenced around 192 AD under Emperor Severus, a period initially marked by a degree of imperial favor due to Severus being healed by a Christian. However, this leniency was short-lived as the prejudice and hostility of the pagan populace prevailed, leading to the enforcement of old anti-Christian laws. The rapid growth of Christianity alarmed pagans, who resorted to blaming Christians for societal misfortunes, thus fueling further animosity.Despite the intensifying persecution, the Christian community demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth. Tertullian noted the significant presence of Christians, suggesting their mass departure would severely depopulate the empire. This period witnessed numerous martyrdoms across the Roman territories. Bishop Victor of Rome, Leonidus (father of Origen), and many of Origen’s followers were beheaded. Women like Rhais and Potainiena suffered horrific deaths by burning, while Basilides, a Roman officer, converted after witnessing a martyrdom and was subsequently beheaded for his Christian faith.Irenaeus, the bishop of Lyons, known for opposing heresies and his involvement in the Easter controversy with Victor of Rome, was also martyred. In Africa, the courageous martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas, along with their companions, stands as a powerful testament to their faith, enduring brutal treatment in the amphitheater. The persecution extended to other regions, including France, where Andocles was beheaded, and Antioch, where Bishop Asclepiades endured torture. Even within the heart of the empire, in Rome, figures like Cecilia and two martyred bishops, Calistus and Urban, faced death for their beliefs. These widespread martyrdoms, affecting individuals from various social strata, highlight the severe challenges faced by the early Christian community during this era.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
