Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - The Sixth Persecution, Under Maximus, AD 235

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

The reign of Maximinus, beginning in A.D. 235, marked a period of intense persecution for Christians. This persecution was initiated by Maximinus himself and was characterized by its brutality and lack of legal due process. In Cappadocia, the president Seremianus actively sought the extermination of Christians from the province.Numerous Christians across various social strata fell victim to this persecution. Prominent figures such as Pontianus and Anteros, the Bishops of Rome, were martyred. Anteros notably offended the government by collecting the acts of the martyrs, highlighting the regime's hostility towards the preservation of Christian history. Roman senators Pammachius, Quiritus (along with their families), and Simplicius also perished, indicating the persecution's reach into the Roman elite. Other martyrs included Calepodius, a Christian minister, Martina, a noble virgin, and Hippolitus, a Christian prelate who suffered a particularly cruel death. The treatment of ordinary Christians was equally harsh. Numberless believers were slain without trial, and their bodies were disposed of disrespectfully, often buried in mass heaps without any decency. This indiscriminate treatment underscored the dehumanizing nature of the persecution. However, this period of intense suffering ended with the death of Maximinus in A.D. 238. His successors, Gordian and Philip, ushered in a period of peace for the Church lasting over ten years. This respite came to an end in A.D. 249 with the outbreak of a violent persecution in Alexandria. This later persecution, however, was instigated by a pagan priest and occurred without the knowledge of the emperor, setting it apart from the emperor-led persecution under Maximinus. Thus, the early Church experienced alternating periods of severe persecution and relative peace during this era.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
