Dementia Took My Dad -Terry's Story Ep 4
from Ampersand The Enigma Podcast · host Ampersand The Enigma Podcast
This episode is a heartfelt episode with Terry who shares her story with Rainbow Blak about her experience of being a care giver to her father who had Dementia and all the emotions, practicalities, sacrifices this very cruel disease forces upon family members. Its an invaluable shared experience from Terry and Rainbow Blak because Rainbow Blak is also a care giver for both her parents who are diagnosed with early vascular dementia both in their 60's. Listen to this very candid conversation between two care givers that are able to nurture, care, be strong, try and live a normal life whilst becoming almost like parents to their own parents. Nobody said it was going to be easy but dementia is the devastating illness that robs you of the person you once knew turning that person from an adult to a child once again. Dementia isn't something thats openly talked about in the Black community but its fast becoming that silent killer that many find themselves experiencing. I guess the purpose of sharing their experiences the laughter, the tears, the pain that Dementia or Alzheimer's disease can bring is to breakdown some of the stigmas of mental health and how its viewed or not even understood in Black cultures. Terry also shares what happens when you lose your parents to a disease like Dementia how to process that bereavement, what feelings and thoughts come with losing your love ones to this very cruel illness. Terry and Rainbow Blak hope that by sharing their experiences of being a care- giver to Dementia parents that it will support others that may find themselves taking up this role. Thank you so much to Terry for sharing your story, you always bring the light with you , which is now helping me to care for both my parents who have Dementia, much love Rainbow Blak.
