Digital Program Helps Kids Cut Sugar
from Charlottesville News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
A new digital program called weSIPsmarter is helping families cut back on sugary drinks—starting with kids. Developed by University of Virginia researchers and funded by a $669,000 grant, the program uses six online modules and daily reminders via email, text, and phone calls to track sugar intake and promote healthier habits. Currently testing in eight Head Start programs across five rural states, it’s already enrolled 94 families and aims to reach 372 by next year. Beyond kids’ drink habits, the study also tracks parents’ sugar consumption, diet quality, BMI, and overall well-being. Early results show strong engagement, with researchers hopeful that teaching healthy habits early—with parents leading the way—can create lasting change.
