You've probably heard of the envelope budgeting system, where once you get paid, you put actual cash into different categorized envelopes. However, as you may have seen from a recent viral story, make sure those envelopes aren't anywhere near a paper shredder.  Home automation is becoming quite popular, and a great way to get started is with the Philips Hue Light Bulbs.
