Lipót császár az osztrák származású barokk építészmestert, Fischer von Erlach-ot bízta meg egy vadászkastély építésével. Fél évszázaddal késõbb Mária Terézia udvari építészével, Nicolaus Pacassival építtette át a kastélyt rokokó stílusú nyári rezidenciává, és udvartartásával együtt, amely nem kevesebb mint 1500 fõt számlált, itt töltötte a nyári hónapokat.
