DTCC Launches Tokenization Service, Blending Finance & Tech
from The Daily News Now! Business
DTC Launches Tokenization Service: A New Era of Liquidity, Transparency, and Efficiency The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporations DTC unit is set to launch its tokenization service, starting with a limited phase in July and going full-scale by October. This service will handle custody for over $14 trillion in assets, including bonds, stocks, and money market instruments from the U.S. and over 131 countries. The service is a result of a three-year pilot approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission last December 2025. It covers highly liquid assets like parts of the Russell 1000 index, exchange-traded funds tracking major U.S. benchmarks, and Treasuries. Tokenized versions will have the same rights and protections as traditional holdings. DTCCs president and CEO, Frank La Salla, believes this service will bring better liquidity, transparency, and efficiency across markets. It was developed with an industry working group of over 50 players, including custodians, asset managers, and broker-dealers from both traditional and decentralized finance. Banks and broker-dealers could potentially reduce capital buffers due to real-time settlement and just-in-time funding. However, analysts like David Easthope from Coalition Greenwich caution that corporate treasurers may not see significant benefits yet, as stablecoins offer quicker value, and tokenized securities benefits are still in the future. As standards align and pilots roll out, this service could reshape how we move money, blending old-school finance with digital speed for smoother global trades.
