Dot to dot. A new skill every day in five minutes. Hello you Dot to Dot listeners. In this little brief nugget from across the pond, I'm going to talk about a new update to the Samuel L.
Jackson skill. Now, I don't know if that skill has come across the pond yet or to different other countries other than the United States, but in early times you would say the A-Lady name and you would say something like this, Alexa, ask Samuel L. Jackson to tell me a joke, or Alexa, ask Sam to tell me the weather. It was pretty cool.
Sam would read out the weather or tell you a joke. But with a recent update, as of the middle of September, he can actually be a wake word for your Echo. So just to flash back a little bit, historically in the settings, you can actually have your Echo respond to different names other than the A-Lady name. And you can say, you can configure it to respond to computer, if you felt like Gavin Kirk, Echo, or Amazon.
But now you can do it with saying, hey Samuel, and ask him the weather and stuff like that. So if you've already purchased the skill, all you need to do is enable the Samuel L. Jackson hey wake word separately. And to do that, you will say, Alexa, enable hey Samuel.
Well, O.T.W., you're all set. It might take us a minute to set some stuff up. Yeah, we'll be here if you need us. Just say, Alexa.
Or, hey Samuel. Before we continue, Sam uses mature content. Well, yeah, it's true. I have been known to occasionally use some words that may not be suitable for all ages.
Is it okay to continue with the explicit version? No. Clean version. Got it.
If you change your mind, you can update the setting in your Alexa app. You're all set. Try asking me a question to play some music or tell you a joke. Okay, and as I kind of explained there, you actually can trigger your Echo with either expression now.
So let's give it a try. This could be a whole new world for voice assistants if we can start changing the wake words. Okay, so let's give it a try. Hey Samuel, tell me a joke.
How do you count a shark's teeth? Not by hand. Okay. All right, so you get a little idea of how that works.
So it's pretty cool. Pretty cool. And they've also expanded a lot on Sam's vocabulary, and they've made some other improvements if you look in the description online. So I hope that is something you guys can enjoy, and if you'd like to find out more about what I'm doing, I'm an assistive technology instructor with the New Vision program at Goodwill, and you can check me out on the Echo Tips podcast or at our website, goodwillvalues.com slash newvision.
