Doctor. The daily five minute skilled emotion for everyone who's simply dotting about Alexa Hey guys Robin here today. We're going to look at a skill called the prisoners dilemma. You might have heard about it It's about a very famous experiment Undertaken by a zimbardo in Stanford University You certainly wouldn't be allowed to do it today, but it was aimed at testing game theory now game theory is nothing to do with gaming It's to do with relationships Trust and cooperation and I'll fire this up and then I'll explain Game theory and this this some model of cooperation and trust or betrayal was originally developed by flood and Russia Two psychologists way way back.

So yep, let's go. I like open prisoners dilemma game. Hey Welcome to the prisoners dilemma game. Let's play now.

Do you want to cooperate or defect? Help the prisoners dilemma is a standard example in game theory It presents a situation where two parties separated and unable to communicate must each choose between cooperating with the other or not The highest reward for each party occurs when both parties choose to cooperate yet individually betrayer could earn more points More specifically if they both betray each other each one gets one point if one cooperates whereas the other defects the latter gets five points Well, the former gets nothing if they both cooperate they each get three points in this five round party The goal is to earn between 15 and 25 points. Do you want to go back to the game? Yes Hey Welcome back.

Do you want to cooperate or defect? corporate You have chosen to cooperate your opponent to score three to three. Do you want to cooperate or defect cooperate? You have chosen to cooperate your opponent to score six to six.

Do you want to cooperate or defect cooperate? You have chosen to cooperate your opponent to score nine to nine. Do you want to cooperate or defect? You have chosen to cooperate your opponent to score 1212 Do you want to cooperate or defect?

Corporate. You have chosen to cooperate. Your opponent too. Score, 15-15.

Do you want to know more about your opponent's strategy? Yes. Your opponent was using light dolphin strategy. The opponent have a long memory, but they turn a blind eye to a single betrayal.

If you betray him more than once, the opponent will never cooperate with you again. Okay. I'm used well. Basically, this is supposed to parallel business relationships where people make decisions to either do the dirty on someone and welch on an agreement, for example, or to cooperate and both do what they agreed to do.

But this has got parallels in relationships, in marriage, in any relationships, really. It's about trust and betrayal or defection. It's a defect each time, but it means defect. Yeah.

There you go. Now, light dolphin. Not heard of that one before. Last time I played it, it used the Jesus strategy, which is basically always to cooperate, regardless of what the other party does.

Now, I'm going to do it one more time, and we'll see what happens if I betray or defect because I've really got the help now. You both have chosen to defect each other. Score, zero, colon, five. Give it a win.

Do you want to cooperate or defect? Co-operate. Give him one last chance. You have chosen to cooperate, but your opponent betrayed you.

Score, zero, ten. Do you want to know more about your opponent's strategy? Yes. Your opponent was using two-seched strategy.

Inverted Jesus, the opponent always defects. Mm-hmm. Okay. So he won that time because he did the dirty on me twill.

Twice when I tried to be good, and all the rest of the time we were just being horrible to each other. But what this whole thing shows is that as soon as trust is gone, because this is against a machine that is randomly choosing a different response strategy, but if this was husband wife or siblings or friends or companies, as soon as the trust is gone, then what you find is that there's a lot of betrayal or defection going on, particularly if one person was really trying to cooperate and the other one did a dirty on them. That really stings, and especially as the other one leaves winning. And so yeah, once that's gone, that trust and that friendship really, then everyone loses.

And why does everyone lose? Because they won, well, they didn't get 15 and that was the objective of the game was to get at least 15. And so yeah, they've kind of got a paper victory, but next time, you know, if this was real life, we certainly wouldn't even get that because once it's been twice shy. So yeah, there you go.

If everyone cooperates with each other all the time in relationships and in business, then in the long run it will be better relationships, a more burgeoning economy, that sort of thing. So that's cool. I'm Robin signing off and I will speak to you tomorrow. Feedback comments demos, the.to.podcast and gmail.com.
