On Sunday 31st of December 2000, in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward, Haruko was worried. She hasn’t been able to contact her daughter, Yasuko Miyazawa, all morning. I mean it’s not too surprising, she’s probably preparing for the new year with her husband, Mikio and two children 8-year-old Niina and 6-year-old Rei, but still, who’s too busy to contact their mother? But when Haruko tried to call Yasuko again, she realised the Miyazawa home phone had been disconnected. This was so unusual and started to really concern Haruko. She wondered if something was wrong and thought, “I’ll just pop in to check on them.”Luckily, Haruko only lived next door so this would be a quick task to ease her nerves. When she knocks on the door Haruko hopes Yasuko will open the door with a warm smile, wave her mum in and tell her, “Oh mum you worry too much,” and the two would laugh about the whole thing over breakfast. Instead, Haruko knocks on the door and silence. Haruko is now extremely distressed, she bought her spare key, so she opens the door to the Miyazawa home, and she’s greet by a mortifying sight, one she would never forget.
