E24: Zeina Maasri

Episode 24 is a conversation with designer, historian, and educator Zeina Maasri on the visual and cultural politics of the Arab world and in particular on her most recent project "Decolonising the Page: The Visual Politics and Poetics of Postcolonial Arabic Publications," an online exhibition showcasing 250 books.  Zeina is a graphic designer from Lebanon who became a teacher, and then a historian, driven by a growing unease with the narrow frameworks through which design history is usually taught. Both her published books, Off the Wall (Bloomsburry, 2009) and Cosmopolitan Radicalism (Cambridge University Press, 2020) are efforts into documenting visual culture that had been largely overlooked.  "Decolonising the Page: The Visual Politics and Poetics of Postcolonial Arabic Publications" is the result of years of research and an extraordinary contribution to graphic design history. It's a project that asks us to rethink where design history lives, who gets recorded, and what happens when we take the archive seriously as a political space. - O episódio 24 é uma conversa com a designer, historiadora e educadora Zeina Maasri sobre a política visual e cultural do mundo árabe e, em particular, sobre o seu mais recente projeto, "Decolonising the Page: The Visual Politics and Poetics of Postcolonial Arabic Publications", uma exposição online que apresenta 250 livros. Zeina formou-se em design de comunicação no Líbano onde se tornou professora e, mais tarde, historiadora, impulsionada por um crescente desconforto com as estruturas restritas através das quais a história do design é geralmente ensinada.
