Irgendwie lebt Familie Ketelsen nie gemeinsam an einem Ort. Nach dem Börsencrash versucht Inge mit ihrem Vater, den Deli in New York zu verkaufen, um in die Heimat zurückzukehren. Ihre Mutter und die jüngeren Schwestern sind schon wieder auf der Insel Föhr. Die hatte Hermann eigentlich für die Seefahrt verlassen - aber daraus wird nichts. Und so landet schließlich auch er in New York. Die Stadt mag zwar groß sein, doch Inge und Hermann finden sich trotzdem. Und dann kommt der Krieg.
