El Tio Part 2

from Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales · host Joseph, Gabriel , and Mike Behill

Send us a textEl Tío is a Devil or spirit that guards the underground realms of the mines. Miners believe that El Tío has the power to protect them from accidents, disasters, and dangers that can occur while working deep underground as well as cause them.  Miners offer various offerings to El Tío as part of their rituals. These offerings can include coca leaves, alcohol, cigarettes, and other items. These rituals are meant to appease El Tío and seek protection and prosperity.El Tío is often represented by sculptures or effigies that are placed in the mines. These sculptures are typically grotesque and depict a horned figure with "exaggerated features". They are adorned with offerings and serve as a focal point for miners' rituals.Miners have a complex relationship with El Tío, as they believe that he can provide both protection and also be vengeful if not properly respected. There is a sense of fear and reverence associated with El Tío, and miners often adhere to certain rituals and taboos to maintain their safety. The worship of El Tío also carries a reflection of the harsh conditions that miners historically faced, including the exploitation they endured during the colonial era. It serves as a way for miners to cope with the challenges of their work and seek protection in a dangerous environment. Sit back and enjoy part 2 of El Tío.
