This shiur goes through five steps of dealing with emergency, potentially life-threatening situations on Shabbos. Below is a chart of the four different categories of medical situations on Shabbos. These will be addressed in coming Thursday night shiurim on this podcast iy"H. Identifying the Situation Emergencies: Any situation which can potentially be life-threatening. All safek = questionable threats are included. Including: 1. Onset of Labor 2. Any Threat to pregnancy 3. Bleeding 4. Concussion 5. Breakage 6. Internal Pain 7. Bad Burns 8. Terrible Toothaches 9. High Fever 10. Patients with Serious Medical Conditions Threat to Limbs: When its guaranteed there’s no-threat to life, but there is a possible loss of limb, or functionality of limb. Examples: 1. Severe cut to a finger, and the bleeding has been stopped and controlled by EMTs. 2. Cut on the face which can lead to disfiguring scarring. 3. Burns which have received EMT care already. 4. Broken Teeth Sickness: Any situation which is clearly not life-threatening but causes the person to be in bed, or feel like they need to be in bed. Examples: 1. Cold or Flu 2. Strep 3. Extremely Painful Headaches 4. Migraines 5. Post-Surgery Pain (even minor procedures.) 6. Stomach Viruses 7. Low Fever Pain: Any situation which causes pain but doesn’t make a person feel sick, or need to go to bed. Examples: 1. Sprained Ankle 2. “Minor” Headache 3. Small Cuts/Bruises/Burns 4. “Minor” Toothache 5. Skin Conditions 6. Heartburn and Stomach Aches 7. Allergies
