In his book, The Anatomy of Story, in the section on Story Movement, John Truby, talks about the Meandering Story. ‘The meandering story follows a winding path without apparent direction…’ Indeed. This episode is something like that. It meanders along with nary a hint of purpose. Topics I wander through: What makes me a buy a book Why I don’t read blurbs An accidental ‘review’ of T J Klune’s, The House in the Cerulean Sea How Klune’s book helped my tackle my own WIP The need to slow down (and speed up) when writing middle grade fiction. How I used a screenplay format to get my story started, get a bird’s eye view of events and find a confident (although superficial) launching place Other rambly stuff that might be of interest to other creatives Take from it what you will, dear author. Christmas Every Day and Other Stories Told for Children by William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920) LibriVox Five short delightful stories for children, told in the voice of "the papa" to "the girl" and "the boy" William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 – May 11, 1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day" and the novel The Rise of Silas Lapham. (Reader’s Note for story 3: A pony engine is a small locomotive for switching cars from one track to another.) (Summary by Wikipedia and David Wales) Truth and Beauty Bryan the Girl and Jesse Feddersen In school, science and art are taught in different classrooms. Truth & Beauty brings them together at last, proving that throughout history the two fields have a common goal: to better understand the world around us. An Editor's Tales Anthony Trollope These 'tales' describe a series of encounters between various magazine editors and those who wish to have their works published. While containing some amusing bits, the tales are relatively grim, compared to most Trollope stories. The Turkish Bath: This editor, visiting a Turkish bath, is accosted by an Irish stranger, who, after some conversation, requests to submit a manuscript to the magazine. The editor's reactions to the solicitation and subsequent familiarity with the writer's circumstances forms the frame of the story. Humor arises about the Turkish bathing situation, and the reluctance of editors to make themselves available to amateur writers.Mary Gresley is the rather sad tale of a young girl's giving up her writing career to satisfy the deathbed wish of the curate she was engaged to. The editor, in this tale (and also in the next), became rather involved emotionally with the girl and wished her to continue writing.Josephine de Montmorenci A Brown Girl and A White Girl: The Podcast BGWG Podcast Follow along with Diana & Mary (your Brown Girl & White Girl hosts, respectively) as they uncover how to survive grad school and thrive outside of it.
