7. The Basement — A Widowed Musician's Descent Into Madness in 1873

from In Another Room · host Violet Hour Media

Wendy finally unlocks the basement door — the room she has been told never to enter, the room every spirit in the house has been pointing her toward. What she sees there is the story of how the house began. In 1873, Frank Smith is finishing construction on the grand mansion he has built as a gift for his beloved wife. She is traveling west to join him. She never arrives. Wracked with grief and slowly losing his grip on reality, Frank begins seeing a shadowy woman flitting through the halls of his nearly-finished home — an apparition that will lead him, eventually, to commit a murder he doesn't understand and bury its evidence beneath the basement floor. When Wendy digs in the same spot, more than a century later, she finds bones. And then she finds something that should not be possible. Episode 7 of In Another Room — a serialized horror limited series in eight parts. For fans of The Magnus Archives, The Lovecraft Investigations, Limetown, and Archive 81.
