EP 170: How Can Church Leaders Help Abuse Survivors? Tina Smith Part One

“When a spiritual environment changes, lives are saved.” That phrase is at the heart of Tina's life as well as her book “Renewing Our Minds in Love: Integrating Neuroscience and Scripture for Wholeness and Healing.” As a psychotherapist and debut author, Tina Smith lays out the harmony that exists between science and Scripture, and how, through a better understanding of both, church leaders and Christians can be Christ's hands to others. The fact that humans have the capacity to change their own brains and become healthier through developing healthy thought patterns, self-talk, spiritual disciplines, and relationships, has profound implications for science and for spiritual transformation and discipleship. In our current church culture environment, pastors and leaders are increasingly encountering individuals affected by mental health issues, abuse, trauma, and, sadly, faith-based trauma at an alarming rate. The uncomfortable reality is, most church leaders are simply not equipped to handle the complexities those struggles involve, let alone aware of the tools and methods needed to help people heal (particularly when it comes to religious trauma).
