We also come to understand that the torch that Spud holds for Em can no longer be kept in the dark, so he asks the others how he might confess his love for her. They are quite unsettled by this request, and though they try to laugh it off at first, Spud remains persistent until they cave and lend him a helping hand--so to speak. One of the curiouser developments is that it's Valentine's Day. However, Em isn't in a very good mood per se. She's in her quarters and blowing off steam during one of her rigorous workouts.
