EP 424: Overcoming Adversity with Paul Peterson

from The Rich Outdoors · host Cody Rich: Hunting Podcaster, Outdoorsman, Adventure Seeker

Paul Peterson, aka @paulofthewild a customer service rep at Firstlite joins me on todays podcast to talk about overcoming adversity on a hunt. Paul has been pushing the envelope on adventurous hunts ever since he decided to move out west and chase his dreams of western hunting. Last year Paul drew one of Idaho’s hardest sheep hunts. A hunt that many end up going home empty-handed on due to the sheer logistical and physical challenges. We dive into pauls hunt and many of the ups and downs of a tough DIY sheep hunt. We also talk about how adversities on a hunt can really make or break a trip, as well as how to mitigate many of the common mistakes. Show Notes:  Intro & Background – 0h 4m 41s Moving Out West – 0h 10m 20s Top 3 Adversity Challenges of Hunting – 0h 17m 25s Paul’s Unlimited Sheep Hunt – 0h 23m 59s Reflecting on Success & a Bad Situation – 0h 43m 56s Continually Raising the Bar – 0h 52m 33s First Lite Gear: New for 2020 – 0h 56m 20s Story Behind “Paul of the Wild”- 0h 58m 25s Today’s Podcast brought to you by On X and goHUNT. Its tag season right now and if you aren’t familiar with that term it basically means now is the time of year hardcore hunters are figuring out our fall plans. Some of us obsess over this kind of stuff, but it’s for good reason. For me, this is the most important time spent. There is nothing worse than spending a week hunting only to hike your face off and only see one or two animals. Yes, hunting is about more than the kill but I will take a hunt where I get to see more wildlife than other hunters any day of the week. This year I probably had one of my best years to date and I attribute that to the planning and preparation done this time of year. I can’t stress it enough if you want to be more successful having the right tag in your pocket is one of the biggest keys. Having said all of that, when I jump on the computer to find the next hunt the two websites I log into are goHUNT.com and Onxmaps.com. This time of year its pretty much daily and in fact Jaden and I have to regulate ourselves in the office because thats a rabbit whole we may not come out of for the rest of the day. GoHUNT.com’s filtering tool allows me to browse and scan for hunts, dive into the numbers, and is full of amazing data to help me analyze the numbers. I am constantly looking for that balance great hunt while making sure I can actually draw tags. As I find units in goHUNT the next thing I do is switch over to my On X account and start to analyze that unit from a maps perspective. Can I get away from people? Is there enough public land? Does the terrain look like the kind of hunt I want? It is a constant back and forth between ON X and goHUNT. If you are new to these platforms I promise you the more you play with them the better you get. I have often said that I personally don’t think I can see the answer until I have starred at the problem long enough to see what everyone else doesn’t. I know some of the best hunters in the world and the large majority of them use these tools in much the same way and with much the same mindset. If you want to have your best year yet. Don’t just get both of these tools, become proficient at using them. Use the promo Code TRO for both your ON X and goHUNT memberships and you will not only save money but help support this podcast as well.
