[Ep 6] Rob Fitzhugh (Director, Dublin Smartphone Film Festival)

from On The Fly with Jon Gill · host Jon Gill

Thanks so much for downloading On The Fly! This is episode 6 with Rob Fitzhugh – Director of the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival You can find him online here: Website: www.dublinsmartphonefilmfestival.com Instagram/Twitter/Facebook: @dubsmartff Rob is brilliant at getting people to market their films and market them well for film festivals. I contributed to the 2019 festival and for the first time I was thinking about promo images, social media content for the festival to use to promote my film. It was down to Rob and his experience as a festival organiser and it absolutely paid off. Non-filmmakers out there might be wondering what’s in this episode for them? All I can say is that what I learned from Rob is (ironically) what I’ve been telling people in comms for years about their blog posts, websites, their businesses, etc. It's so easy to forget this stuff in a different context and yet it's all basically the same. It's self promotion: Thinking about your audience Thinking about your story and nailing that pitch Being brutal with information and cutting it back to be as concise as possible So whatever you do, if there's an element of promotion (or something that you missing and could be using these techniques) then there’s something to learn here. And if this is helpful remember and check out the #OnTheFlyPodcast extra with SJ van Breda (from Ep4) who talks about her experiences with film festivals! Song for the Episode Dedicated to Rob is "Memory of a Free Festival by David Bowie" Not that the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is free, but as good as, it's amazing value and Rob and his team have a huge passion for what they do which is evident all year round in the work that he does in training and promoting filmmaking. This is my favourite version the song, recorded at The BBC. –––––––––––––– In case you didn’t know… My name’s Jon Gill and I’m a filmmaker based in Fife, Scotland For almost 10 years I’ve been helping people across the UK to tell their stories shooting, editing and sharing video using a mobile phone or tablet. They might be personal stories, business stories, “how to” stories, holiday stories for that matter… I can make your video I can make a video with you (you learn on the job), or I can train you to make your video on your own If that’s something you’ve been thinking, that would be useful to your business, organisation or team, then please get in touch – You’ll find me at MadeOnAMobile.co.uk –––––––––––––– Thanks again for joining #OnTheFlyPodcast Please subscribe if you haven’t already to make sure you get the pod as soon as it’s uploaded. What would be really helpful just now is recommendations to others, shares on social media, ratings where you download you podcast. I know it takes time but it’s so valuable to me being able to keep doing this and maybe even getting some sponsorship. It takes about a day in total to produce one of these so in real terms it’s a cost to my business – but if it’s worthwhile (to you) I want to keep doing them. So please support in any way you can. See you for Episode 7!
