It’s National Insider Risk Awareness Month, a month where companies and government agencies step out and look to step up their insider risk understanding. ClearanceJobs chatted with Dave Komendat, the former Chief Security Officer at Boeing, currently the president of DSKomendat Risk Management Services, and recently named as an advisor for SIMS Software, a leading security information management system supporting the national security community and commercial sector in addressing insider risk.Insider threats are nothing new, and Komendat spent a career addressing security from a variety of levels. He learned the important art of not just understanding risk, but being able to convey it to the C-suite – which is a critical aspect of developing a successful security program. For too long, security was a stove-piped function without the proper crossover into other key company functions, like IT and human resources. This is the first in a new podcast series from RANE Insights, entitled On Security with Brian Lynch. Over the past several years the topic of “insider threats” has been met with varying degrees of concern in the board rooms of most medium to large organizations. While some organizations perceive such risk as minimal in relation to other greater challenges, others allocate significant resources to address these threats without a clear understanding of how and why their trusted employees, contractors, and business associates could undertake an action which could result in serious financial and reputational damages to the firm. Frequently, a significant investment in technology is seen as the silver bullet solution. While enhancing the organization’s ability to monitor and identify potential cases of insider threats, it frequently fails to address the core issues leading insiders to undertake actions which circumvent technological controls, policies, and procedures. As companies have restructured operations to a remote workforce because of the COVID-19 epidemic, these previously unaddressed vulnerabilities are set to grow exponentially. In this podcast, host Brian Lynch interviews Peter Warmka, Founder of Counterintelligence Institute (www.counterintelligence-institute.com). During his 20+ year overseas career as a Senior Intelligence Officer with the CIA, Peter specialized in breaching the security of targeted entities in fulfillment of foreign intelligence collection requirements. Leveraging his years of direct experience in insider targeting and manipulation, his current mission is to assist clients with security awareness training and consultancy services focused on the development of an effective insider threat mitigation program.

Cyber threats arise from numerous sources, including state actors, terrorist groups, criminals, hackers, business competitors, and even trusted insiders. In fact, it’s the threat from trusted insiders that may pose the most significant threats. Whether as a malicious act —the deliberate exfiltration of information or introduction of malware or other harmful code —or inadvertent actions by careless employees, the greatest threat to an organization’s information system is often on the inside. On May 25, NCSC Insider Threat Directorate (ITD) will participate in a CyberWeek webinar to discuss the role of insider threat mitigation in cybersecurity. During this hour-long event, we’ll discuss the current risk environment, including heightened vulnerabilities created by the Global Pandemic; identify potential threats posed by trusted insiders and the adversaries who seek to co-opt or exploit them; and share best practices and resources available to mitigate the risk.
