Episode #127 How to Articulate Your Value

It isn't enough to be valuable. You must be able to articulate that value and communicate it in a language the leadership understands. Here's what I see: You present a history of the work you've done and deals you've closed ("Look at everything I've done for this firm") and tell yourself it should be enough. But entitlement doesn't get you promoted. Value does. You work diligently with your head down and hope someone will notice and give you the role. ("They can see I'm a safe pair of hands"). But hope doesn't get you the role. Value does. You work hard with your head high and make it someone else's job to connect the dots. ("I shouldn't have to spell it out!"). But expectation doesn't get you promoted. Value does. Whether you're preparing your business case for promotion to partner, interviewing for a new role today or looking for a permanent role at the end of your training contract, the message is the same: don't leave it to others to work out the value of what you do.
