Episode 2: Basketball with Sofia & Sienna F.

from Insiders Look Into Girls Sports · host Emma C

Basketball- About Basketball: The evolution of the basketball hoop: The first hoop, the peach basket- The first basketball hoop was a peach basket. James Naismith hung a peach basket on an elevated track about 10 feet off the ground. This hoop introduced a new game on December 21, 1891. But every time the ball went in the hoop, someone would have to retrieve it, which was a struggle and time-consuming. The second evolution, metal rim and backboard- The second era of the basketball hoop was the metal rim and backboard. In 1893, Naismith replaced the peach basket with a metal rim and backboard, which made it less time-consuming. He later added a net in 1912. The third evolution, Standardized Hoop The third era was the standardized hoop. The standard diameter of the hoop is 18 in. and the backboard size was set. This started in 1936 and the era ended in 1975. The fourth evolution, the Modern Hoop The fourth era began in 1975. They had to change the hoop because when the basketball players Shaquil O'Neil and David Thompson came into the league, they had to change the strength and durability of the boards. Breakaway rims were then added to prevent the boards from breaking. In 1986, the first adjustable hoop was invented. The game The original rules were very different from today. Naismith's original rules were basic, with 13 players on each team and a prohibition against running with the ball. Over the next decade, as the sport gained popularity, the rules evolved to include dribbling, free throws, and the concept of a five-player team. The free throw was introduced when a player was fouled. The free throw line's distance, 15 feet from the basket, has remained unchanged since its introduction. Today the game has changed a lot and here are some of the rules: Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, with a hoop at each end. The court is divided into two main sections by the mid-court line. When a team makes a basket, they score two points and the ball goes to the other team. If a basket, or field goal, is made outside of the three-point arc, then that basket is worth three points. A free throw is worth one point. Free throws are awarded to a team according to some formats involving the number of fouls committed in a half and/or the type of foul committed. Fouling a shooter always results in two or three free throws being awarded to the shooter, depending upon where he was when he shot. If he was beyond the three-point line, then he gets three shots.
