Nimue returns to Avalon as Uther, on the brink of death, names three men as the Edling King Mordred’s protectors. Merlin seeks Arthur in Gaul and asks him to return to Britain. Gundleus, Ladwys and the Silurians arrive at Avalon to pay their respect to Queen Norwenna and the baby, before unleashing a surprise attack. Derfel, Nimue and others manage to escape the nightmarish scenes at Avalon with the Silurians in pursuit.
