Today Justice Avril Inglis joins us to discuss her legal career. Appointed to the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench in June 2016, Justice Inglis previously had a prolific career in criminal law. She obtained her law degree from the University of Manitoba in their first class to include an equal number of women and men. She went on to practice criminal prosecutions in both Manitoba and Alberta. As part of the Serious and Violent Crimes unit, she has worked on lengthy criminal prosecutions, including many involving sexual assault. Justice Inglis provides advice both for law students who want to pursue criminal law, and for handling tough subject matter in the courtroom. We also discuss the importance of prioritizing mental health and what motivates taking on these traumatic files, with a view to recognizing that everyone you encounter in the courtroom has their own unique background and experience.
