Summary

In life, we struggle to find meaning and purpose as it feels like we are going nowhere and chasing a shiny object after another. This is why we created the "Pursuing Our Own Paths" Podcast to document our journey as two individuals who decided to go away from the conventional path. James being an ex-high paying engineer at a well-known US firm to becoming an esports personality and entrepreneur. Ervin going from a normal student to becoming a freelance copywriter and coach for other freelancers. In this episode, we learn more about Ervin's life story and how he got to where is today after going through the ups and downs in his life. We will mainly be discussing: 1) How Ervin went from a normal Singaporean student to becoming a freelance copywriter and coach even before entering university 2) Did Ervin regret his life decisions so far? Find out the life philosophy that helped him to stick to his decisions 3) The important teaching principle that parents should think about when it comes to raising their children and how this might set them up for success in the future 4) How does it feel to go from having your own chauffeur to not even being able to pay for Wifi at home (Plus: The important life lesson that Ervin learned from this experience) 5) When you are born poor and stay in a place with horrible living conditions, even the slightest improvement in your life will be as though you are in heaven but the opposite is true too. If you are born royalty and rich, the slightest decrease in quality of life can be super painful for you. (This is why you must practice this important life value that Ervin preaches about) 6) Do you love writing and always wanted to make writing work for you as a career? Listen to what Ervin has to say about copywriting and what some of the best copywriters can make doing it fulltime in the space for years 7) How do you know if you are on the right direction in life? Steve Jobs uses the same technique as well when it comes to asking for life advice. 8) James on one of life's biggest questions: do you focus on the destination or on the journey itself?  9) Whether you are an entrepreneur, writer, coach, lawyer, doctor, or any kind of profession, ask yourself this one question to figure out if this is the right calling for you. (Half the battle is won if you get this right) 10) What is the 10,000 hour golden rule and how staying focused on one path that is aligned with your calling might bring you huge returns in the long term 11) Even if you are on the right track, there will be times where you feel sad and happy at times but how do you deal with this? Listen to what Ervin and James have to say on this 12) During his journey, did Ervin question his choices at any point in his life? (Hint: His answer might shock you) Also, how can you deal with a toxic mentality that almost any entrepreneur/freelancer will face on the journey known as "Imposter Syndrome" 13) The importance of mentors and how they have helped to shape Ervin to become who he is today 14) An interesting life lesson we can learn from the movie "Batman Begins" where Alfred talks to Batman about his personal past and how he got hurt badly when he realized his own mentor that he trusted his whole life betrayed him by burning his house down (Don't worry, there was a good reason for it) 15) When your mentors asks you to do something that is not familiar and uncomfortable, here is what you should do  And many more interesting insights you can learn...
