The club itself was originally founded by a group of followers of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly referred to as Quakers. Their aim to "omit all social frills that enter into the life of a country club, and mike it a shrine where the skill and ingenuity of the lover of the game could have full play" resulted in the club not serving alcohol until 1970.
