You will hear from Dr. Chad Miller, a postdoctoral researcher at the Baker Lab located within the Institute of Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, and Ms. Erin Yang, who is a graduate student also at the IPD at UW.
Dr. Miller and Ms. Yang first explain what proteins are before they describe how proteins are designed. At the basic level, proteins are made up of amino acids. Proteins can be modeled based on their amino acid sequences, or be designed from scratch, which is what Dr. Miller and Ms. Yang work on. Afterwards, they delve into the challenges in designing the proteins and current solutions. The episode ends with a discussion of the potential applications of proteins in healthcare.
