Summary

In life, we struggle to find meaning and purpose as it feels like we are going nowhere and chasing a shiny object after another. This is why we created the "Pursuing Our Own Paths" Podcast to document our journey as two individuals who decided to go away from the conventional path. James being an ex-high paying engineer at a well-known US firm to becoming an esports personality and entrepreneur. Ervin going from a normal student to becoming a freelance copywriter and coach for other freelancers. In this episode, we learn more about James's life story and how he got to where is today after going through the ups and downs in his life. We will mainly be discussing: 1) What Cristiano Ronaldo's biography can teach us about what it takes to succeed in life. (The funny thing is that Ervin forgot he had this book on his bookshelf for more than a year and already took down half a page of notes from reading less than half of the book!) 2) Always wanted to know the answer to this controversial question when it comes to entrepreneurship? Now you know why entrepreneurs breed other entrepreneurs. (Fun fact: Both James and Ervins' parents are entrepreneurs) 3) Why James feel that Aerospace Engineering is a "suck" course and how this led him to reflect on his life choices. 4) If you are about to enter university soon or in the near future, hear what James has to say about the difficulty of taking on a degree compared to your prior education. (This is why so many university/college students drop out. If you understand this early on, it will help you avoid a grave mistake) 5) A quote from Cristiano Ronaldo's biography that differentiates the top 1% from the rest of the world. (It has to do with you, not your parents or anyone else) 6) If James continued with his previous fulltime job, he would have done pretty well and climbed the ranks fast in the company but thanks to a group of retirees in the company, it led him to think for himself and go on his own path. (You might not be as lucky to future pace your career like James so it's good to listen to this advice early on) 7) Why James' mentor in the company works from 7.30am till midnight every day as a fulltime employee even though he has the same position as James. (Just for context: That's unsustainable even for entrepreneurs and I would never work that hard even if I get paid more money. It's never about the money, it's about the lifestyle balance as well) 8) The big idea that college graduates need to think about when finding a stable and high-paying job that your parents won't tell you because they belong to a different era where $5,000 back then is not the same value as $5,000 today. 9) Can anyone be an entrepreneur? Listen to what Ervin and James has to say on this popular question. 10) If you always thought that having a high income is the most important factor in your career, you better think about this as well. This is the reason why most entrepreneurs can perform at such a high level even though they can retire anytime from their business. (This is the same reason that matters to James and why he left the 9-5 corporate life) 11) James' darkest secret that even his parents have no idea about. (This is what the media will never tell you about the world of entrepreneurship but you need to know this if you want to dive into it. More importantly, you need to know what to do when you get to this stage) And many more valuable lessons you can learn...
