Episode 33: Hey Barbie, Part One

Welcome to Part One of our ‘Hey Barbie’ two parter. In this unapologetically pink episode we cover the history of Barbie, some of the questionable decisions made by Mattel (looking at you Mitch…), whilst also discussing what Barbie – a successful, independent, single, child-free, confident woman – represented at a time where women couldn’t own a credit card and one of the only other dolls on the market was Wetsy Betsy. We also discuss the pressure put on Mattel and Gerwig to have an answer for everything, the introduction of the Queens of Africa dolls in 2007 and how the Barbie movie gave voice to the critics. We are also very excited to share our first live SWDYS with Lauren and her experience navigating the healthcare system with endometriosis and PCOS.
