Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Mary Mc Laughlin performs, teaches, writes and records original and traditional songs (in both English and Irish). Having lived in both England and California where she founded a Gaelic Choir, Mary has appeared on over twelve recordings and holds a PhD in Songs of the Irish Otherworld. The song you heard was “Tramps and Hawkers,” a favourite of Brian’s, in his words: “Twas written in the 19th century by hawker Besom Jimmy, but it was passed on to singers involved in the early times of the folk revival by Scottish Traveller Jimmy Macbeath. He used tramp the roads all his working life, in search of farm work and places to sing. He used sing for his dinner at fairs and markets while farm workers were on their break.
