Summary

In life, we struggle to find meaning and purpose as it feels like we are going nowhere and chasing a shiny object after another. This is why we created the "Pursuing Our Own Paths" Podcast to document our journey as two individuals who decided to go away from the conventional path. James being an ex-high paying engineer at a well-known US firm to becoming an esports personality and entrepreneur. Ervin going from a normal student to becoming a freelance copywriter and coach for other freelancers. *Today's episode is a special and fun episode where we talk about James and Ervin's hobbies* We will mainly be discussing: 1) Why Ervin's sister calls him a boring guy (It's not because he works 6 days a week on his business) 2) A hidden market in the hobbies industry where one of Ervin's friends paid almost all of his life savings for a collectible album (This is an important marketing lesson because people are willing to pay top dollar for what they want, not what they need) 3) The different types of rarity for collectibles. (This "Fat Pikachu Card" from the Pokemon Franchise sold for more than a Daniel Wellington watch!) 4) How the Pokemon Trading Card hobby industry opened up a whole new line of jobs for others where one person quit his fulltime job as a lawyer to becoming a Pokemon Youtuber who is now a millionaire collector (Plus: This guy is living the dream opening up Pokemon Cards for his viewers fulltime and grew his channel to over 1 million subscribers today) 5) If you bought this Pokemon Card in 2015 and held it till today, you would have gotten a return on investment (ROI) of about 6,000%! (That's like buying Bitcoin before it spiked years ago from $8,000 to $60,000 in value. Also, there is a piece of cupboard that is able to help you make a downpayment for your house if you sell it today.) 6) How people are diversifying their investment portfolio into unconventional things like collectibles. (Ervin 10X his investment in one year from one Charizard card he sold to the marketplace) 7) The two lessons Ervin learnt when he was into card collecting that is applicable in business. Plus: How this allowed him to amass a small fortune to start his first business afterwards (It's kinda like Gary Vee's side hustle where he encourages people to flip things at garage sales) 8) An important investing rule that will help you make way more money than you would otherwise. (It's not Warren Buffet's rule. 1. Don't lose money. 2. Don't remember rule no.1) 9) One of the most powerful relationship building lessons that is important for any influencer/marketer/business owner. (Ervin used this to build a community of 600 high quality leads with ZERO paid advertising) 10) James' interesting hobby that he recently got into and how this was the same exact game Ervin's copywriting mentor mentioned in a business lesson (This game has a huge community in the world and it doesn't require the Internet, talk about oldschool) 11) This is the game to play if you want to teach your child personal finance from young (You definitely played this game before when you were younger. Hint: It's not UNO) 12) How you can make $30,000 a month playing a board game (This will blow your mind, that's the top 1% of income earners in Singapore) and many more interesting facts about hobbies...
