Jennifer Pan was the epitome of a model teenager, seen as a "golden" daughter by her parents. An exemplary student at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School in Markham, Ontario, she was brought up by Vietnamese refugees who maintained a disciplined household. Following her parents' instructions to the letter, Jennifer excelled academically, securing both admission and a Escholarship to Ryerson and the University in Toronto. Her parents, Hann and Bich Pan, maintained stringent control over her daily activities, doing everything in their power to ensure her success. She was not allowed to attend school dances or parties and was compelled to learn piano, figure skating, and martial arts. The strict regimen proved effective as Jennifer later transferred to the University of Toronto, graduated, and secured a respectable job in a Children's hospital in Toronto… or did she?
