As Derfel and Morgan begin the journey back with Bedwin’s body, Ceinwyn reveals to them that Gorfydd has formed an alliance with the Saxon, Aelle. Upon returning to Dunmonia, Derfel discovers Arthur has banished Nimue to the Isle of the Dead. Meanwhile, Morgan is bereft at the death of Bedwin, confronting Arthur over it. Sansum takes pity on her, and they grow closer.
