Serving as epitaphs, these poems illuminate the lives of the denizens of Spoon River, a fictive hamlet echoing the ambiance of the Spoon River adjacent to Masters's childhood residence in Lewistown, Illinois. Through this anthology, Masters endeavors to deconstruct the veils surrounding bucolic and provincial American existence. Spanning 244 narratives, 212 distinctive personas emerge, elucidating their existences, tribulations, and circumstances of demise.
