The market closed lower on Friday as investors anxiously awaited a keynote speech planned by U-S Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the annual economic policy symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, later in the day. DPP caucus leader Ker Chien-ming refuses to step down despite recall failure D-P-P legislative chief convener Ker Chien-ming is dismissing calls for him to step down following the failure this past Saturday of the remaining seven recall votes targeting K-M-T lawmakers to pass. According to Ker, he plans to remain in his post. Ker was one of the party's most vocal supporters of the recalls - even claiming (聲稱) that when they were successful he planned to seek the post of legislative speaker. Ker's refusal to step down comes after D-P-P legislative caucus whip Wu Szu-yao and caucus secretary-general Chen Pei-yu both said they will now step down from their posts to take responsibility for the failed recalls. 19 rescued by Coast Guard after yacht breaks down near Liuqiu Island Nineteen people have been rescued after the yacht (遊艇) they were on suffered mechanical failure near Liuqiu Island. According to the Coast Guard Administration, the vessel was carrying two crew members and 17 passengers when it lost power about one nautical mile north of the small island. The Coast Guard sent two patrol boats to the yacht and all 17 passengers were rescued and taken to Pingtung County's Donggang Township. The yacht, operating on only one engine, was then escorted back to port for repairs. Migrant Deaths Crossing Mediterranean Sea Tens of thousands of migrants have died attempting (試圖) to cross the Mediterranean Sea. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports Venezuela Over Dozen Released from Prison Venezuelan opposition leaders and civil society groups said that the government released 13 people jailed in a crackdown by the government of President Nicolas Maduro following last year’s disputed elections. Venezuelan authorities did not immediately confirm the releases. Opposition leaders like Henrique Capriles celebrated on social media, calling it a “step forward for those behind bars.” He said eight people were freed, while five more were released under house arrest. It comes more than a year after the South American nation once again erupted (爆發) following presidential elections in July. Australia Protests Demanding Actions to Save Palestinians Tens of thousands of people have marched through Australian cities demanding action to save Palestinians. Peaceful rallies took place on Sunday in Sydney, Melbourne and other cities, urging sanctions on Israel and an end to Australia's arms trade with the country. Police estimated about 10,000 people took part, while organizers claimed 100,000 marched in Sydney alone. The protests followed a report on Friday stating that Gaza’s largest city is gripped by famine (飢荒).
