South African President Jacob Zuma has announced that "after serious reflection" he has decided to move David van Rooyen from his position after just four days in office and replace him with former finance minister, Pravin Gordhan. Zuma stunned the nation and the financial markets by firing Nhlanhla Nene from the post and replacing him with Van Rooyen. The rand went into freefall, dipping below the 16 rand to the US dollar level and government debt costs skyrocketed. Zuma was placed under massive pressure from business and some in his own party took the unprecedented step of publicly calling for his removal.
