Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh
from Start Within w/Coach Colette · host Coach Colette Ellis
Today marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we discuss this historical commemoration. In the early years, little interest existed outside the black community to participate in the celebrations. In some cases, there was explicit resistance by barring the use of public property for the festivities. Today, 47 of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have recognized Juneteenth as either a state holiday or day of observance. The three states that do not recognize Juneteenth are Hawaii, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses FREEDOM. What does FREEDOM mean to you? How do you feel when you notice other people's freedom being restricted or limited? Do you choose to respond, or stay silent? This is a good time as Sukhtej suggests to take action.
