Five Levers for Change in the Literacy Classroom

from The Teacher's Tool Kit For Literacy · host Cue Learning

It’s the nature of the profession that we’re always learning. And particularly as literacy consultant and expert, Sharon Callen spends time looking at old practices vs new ways to think about teaching and ask that challenging question, of others and herself, "why are you doing it that way?"What do we mean by 'levers of change'? In short, it is new, simple ways to think about teaching and learning.THE FIVE LEVERS ARE:Classroom LibrariesIndependent ReadingConferringMini Lessons - Read Alouds, Shared Book ExperienceConnecting Reading with Writing(Note: There are more than five, but these are the beginning steps. Five beginning steps that would have the greatest impact)Why are they important?Because to match the latest research, we need to have students doing a lot more real reading and writing - not just activities. They need to take ownership of what they are doing. They need to see a real purpose in what they are doing. This is where the Good Reader research comes in - if we target the habits and behaviours of good readers, that’s what we will get. Good readers become good readers because they read, choose books and read with accuracy and understanding, not because they did a whole bunch of disconnected reading activities. How do we know which levers to pull?We have seen real changes in our own classrooms and in schools where we work with teachers and leaders. It has led to one of Cue Learning's schools being recognised out of only 200 schools in Australia for exceptional growth in reading in 2019.How do we get them going in the classroom? It doesn’t take a lot to change, it just needs ideas and simple resources, with help from mentors and continually watching the children we teach. It means being much simpler, less planning, more watching and engaging with our students as real readers and writers.Tune in to find out much more!Connect with us!Join our community on Facebook for exclusive resources, Q and A, discussions, insights and more: https://www.facebook.com/groups/teacherstoolkitforliteracyGot any questions?
