Albuquerque’s 39th annual flamenco festival just got even bigger and bolder—with a brand-new choreography competition that crowned Dominique Adessa, a San Francisco-based dancer, as its first-ever winner. Her powerful piece “Una Discusíon Civil” earned her $1,000 and a stage spotlight at the festival, which has been celebrating Spanish culture for nearly 40 years. Adessa, inspired by the film “Carmen,” trained at the only U.S. university with a flamenco degree program, the University of New Mexico. Festival organizer Marisol Encinias, who leads the university’s dance department, said the new competition is designed to spotlight global talent and strengthen the flamenco community. Alongside other contests like “Puentas Flamencos” and “Concurso de Tablao,” the event continues to grow, with next year’s festival already set for July 9–17.
