Paul Klee war Maler, hat aber sein ganzes Leben lang Geige gespielt und ging regelmässig ins Konzert und in die Oper. Als Lehrer am Bauhaus in Weimar und Dessau erklärte er gewisse Grundlagen der bildnerischen Gestaltung gerne auch mit Beispielen aus der Musik: Takt, Rhythmus und Polyphonie sind Begriffe, die häufig vorkommen.
