Forged Checks and Dementia Scandal
from Roanoke News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
A fifty-year-old woman, Melissa Diana Simmons, pleaded guilty to forging government checks after exploiting a vulnerable Vietnam War veteran suffering from dementia. Assigned as his caretaker in May 2022, she convinced him to move in with her and her boyfriend, James Patrick Brown, by June 2023. Over months, she manipulated him into withdrawing $30,000, then added herself as a bank signatory. Bank staff grew alarmed after noticing his deteriorating health, confusion, and foul odor, and intervened by helping him open a new account. Simmons reacted violently when confronted, shouting and banging on the window until police arrived. Her boyfriend later helped withdraw another $70,000. Even while the veteran was hospitalized, Simmons forged his signature on VA checks to steal $8,000 for personal use. She admitted to the fraud and is awaiting sentencing.
