När vi läser de här båda texterna i Hesekiel och Fjärde Moseboken, förstår vi att staven inte bara var en käpp som man stödde sig på. Det är ju så vi alltid sett på staven. Men när vi nu läser de här texterna förstår vi att staven hade en annan funktion också: Man skrev på den. Det blev som en slags dagbok, där minnen och händelser blev representerade. När Hesekiel och Mose skrev på stavarna var det en djup innebörd bakom detta handlande. Det visar på ett mycket större perspektiv, och predikan tar upp några olika sammanhang i Bibeln som lär oss något om Guds trofasthet och uppmaningen att förtrösta på honom.
