Welcome to the York Story Slam podcast, where we feature select stories from our monthly open mic storytelling events in York, Pennsylvania. The theme for our January story slam was FRESH START. One of our winners was Mark Lentz, with his story of growing up with an abusive father and finding ways to channel his anger. Mark earned a spot in our Grand Slam in November. Next up is our second winner, Edward Vasta, who shared about a day trip where he had his first experience with skiing. Edward also earned a spot in our Grand Slam in November. Our final story on this month’s podcast comes from Eileen Joyce. Eileen shared her story of preparing for an inevitable career change, away from her pet tiger. On April 19, 2016, eleven storytellers shared their stories with a sold-out crowd at Holy Hound Taproom in downtown York. The theme for the evening was “Hunger.” Eileen Joyce, one of our regular storytellers at York Story Slam, won with a story about her cat’s tactics for waking Eileen up to feed him. Here’s Eileen. Eileen earned a spot in our Grand Slam in November. Next up is Matt McDunnell. Matt talked about about a vision quest he participated in when he was in college. Our final story on this month’s podcast comes from our friend Jim Breslin, the founder of West Chester Story Slam and Co-Founder of Lancaster Story Slam. It was Jim’s first visit to York Story Slam, and we were delighted when his name was drawn and he told us a story about a month he spent at a wilderness canoe camp when he was a teenager.

Family Feud

Description: Welcome to the York Story Slam podcast, where we feature select stories from our monthly open mic storytelling events in York, Pennsylvania. On September 17th, ten storytellers shared their stories with our audience at Holy Hound Taproom in downtown York. The theme for our September story slam was FAMILY FEUD. We heard stories of grudges, divorces, and deaths in the family, and even one about punching a rabbi. In the end, our winner was Ted Elicker, who won with his story about the time he accidentally auditioned for a game show. Next up we have a story from Jason Plotkin, who shared a story about his family's favorite part of the Thanksgiving turkey. Our final story on this month’s podcast comes from a first-time storyteller for York Story Slam, Jeff Stoltzfus. Jeff told the story of the consequences of his childhood feuding with his sister. All the winners from this year’s monthly open mic story slam events will return to compete for the title of Best Storyteller in York at our Grand Slam in November. We heard stories about both literal and figurative masks people wear. Michelle Macera won with the story about how she exacted revenge on her on-again, off-again high school boyfriend. Our final story on this month’s podcast comes from Billy Krouse, who shared a story about a night on the job as a limo driver. Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th, and it’s our Grand Slam. All the winners from this year’s open mic story slam events will return to compete for the title of Best Storyteller in York.
