After 60 years of serving liquor, Dave’s Drive-In in Fremont, Nebraska, has reinvented itself as a cozy coffee and book haven—shutting down for 13 months to transform its space and mission. Owner Jeff Rise, who took over from his dad thirty years ago, made the switch as his kids headed to college, embracing a new chapter with cold brew, matcha, and bookshelves. While still learning the coffee game, he’s got solid help and great drinks on tap. The bookstore side? Not new—Dave’s has been accepting book donations for eight years, now selling hardcovers for $1 and paperbacks for 50 cents, with all proceeds going to the Friends of Keene Memorial Library. Over the years, they’ve raised $92,000, plus they sell games, custom art by Rise’s mom, and accept DVDs, CDs, and vinyl. Library supporters are thrilled—Denise Kay praised Rise’s long-standing community commitment, calling this evolution a win for both environment and local culture.
