Genesis 12- Abram Tells a lie

from The On Ramp: Daily Bible Reading

This is what I READ:The LORD made promises to Abram (vs 1-3):I will show you [the land]I will make you into a great nationI will bless you and make you famousYou will be a blessing to othersI will bless those who bless youAll families on earth will be blessed through youAbram left as the LORD instructed and traveled to Canaan (vs 4-5).When a famine struck the land, Abram went to Egypt (vs 10).Abram lied and encouraged his wife to lie too (vs 11-13).Pharaoh gave Abram many possessions including “female servants” (vs 16).The lie was discovered and Abram was sent on his way (vs 19-20).God made some pretty great promises to Abram. Land - descendants - fame - blessing - and a gift that would bless “all families on earth” (of course we know this is Jesus!). As he journeyed to Canaan, he was following the LORD’s instructions. Until… a famine came. Whether or not he was supposed to go down to Egypt, I’m not sure. But this is what I know - Abram wasn’t in a great place. He lied and encouraged his wife to lie too. In his lie, he received many possessions from Pharaoh, including “female servants.” Why would I highlight that one? If you flip ahead to Genesis 16, Abram has a child with an Egyptian servant named Hagar. If you don’t know the story, feel free to read ahead see how that goes… 🤦🏼‍♂️APPLY:The Bible is brutally honest about the sin of its heroes. In their fear and impatience, they made some pretty dumb choices. And so have I. They are never commended for their sin. Rather, they are only commended for their faith. Nothing good ever comes from lying. Nothing.MEDITATE:Ephesians 4:24-25 - “Put on your new nature, created to be like God - truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.” PRAY:Jesus please lead us to be people who love the truth - and tell the truth.
