God’s Glory as the Ultimate Purpose of Creation | Jonathan Edwards

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into A Dissertation Concerning The End For Which God Created The World by Jonathan Edwards - The Scriptures Represent God as Making Himself His Own Last Ends in the Creation of the World and Wherein Some Positions Are Advanced Concerning a Just Method of Arguing in This Affair, from What We Find in the Holy ScripturesJonathan Edwards argues that the Scriptures consistently portray God as both the original first cause and the ultimate, final end of all creation. By frequently referring to Himself as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, God indicates that all things originate entirely from Him and ultimately tend toward Him as their final purpose and destination. Edwards asserts that God does not create the world in order to gain existence or divine perfections, since He already possesses these infinitely prior to any creation. Instead, God appropriately makes Himself His own ultimate end as a reflection of His supreme dignity and glory. To systematically determine how Scripture represents God making Himself His end, Edwards establishes twelve logical positions. He initially argues that God’s ultimate goal in His ongoing works of providence is identical to His original goal in the work of creation. Because the inanimate, unintelligent parts of the universe were designed as a habitat for the moral and intelligent world, the ultimate purpose of these moral agents must be the ultimate purpose of the entire universe.Furthermore, Edwards reasons that the specific end God requires His intelligent creatures to seek must perfectly align with His own ultimate purpose in creating them. Since intelligent beings are uniquely capable of knowing their Creator, it is their inherent duty to align their wills with His, actively making His ultimate end their own highest pursuit. Consequently, the highest goals pursued by approved biblical saints, the earnest desires expressed by the most pious souls, and the ultimate value of moral goodness all point directly to God's own final purpose. Finally, Edwards concludes that the ultimate end sought by Jesus Christ, who serves as the chief and most perfect example of the moral world, reveals the very same ultimate end for which God created the universe.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReformedExplainerSpotify Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1t5dz4vEgvHqUknYQfwpRI?si=e-tDRFR2Qf6By1sAcMdkdwhttps://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730
